Rechargeable or Disposable: Which Suits Your Routine?

Many Widex and Signia hearing aids now come in rechargeable versions that charge overnight and last a full day. They're a relief for anyone who struggles with tiny batteries and pull tabs. Disposables still make sense if you spend days hunting or camping away from outlets, or if you like swapping in a fresh cell in seconds. Dr. Fuchs will go over your habits, dexterity, and how much you stream before you decide.

Hearing Aid Battery FAQs

Common questions about hearing aid batteries in Columbus: finding your size, how long each one lasts, what's included after you buy hearing aids, and how to store spares.

Hearing aid batteries come in four standard sizes, and the package color tells you which is which. Size 10 (yellow) fits the smallest devices, like CIC and some small RIC models. Size 312 (brown) is common in RIC, mini BTE, and ITC hearing aids. Size 13 (orange) powers many BTE and ITE devices, and size 675 (blue) is used in high-power BTE hearing aids.

The size is usually printed on the battery door or in your user guide. If you can't find it, bring the hearing aid or an empty package to our Columbus office and we'll tell you on the spot, or call (402) 564-9198 with your model name.

It depends on the size, how many hours a day you wear your hearing aids, and how much you stream. As a rough guide, size 10 batteries last about 3 to 7 days, size 312 about 5 to 10 days, size 13 about 9 to 14 days, and size 675 about 14 to 21 days.

Streaming phone calls, TV, or music over Bluetooth can shorten that a lot. One habit helps: after you peel off the tab, wait about a minute before closing the battery door. That gives the battery time to take in air and reach full power. If your batteries are suddenly dying much faster than usual, the hearing aid itself may need a look, so give us a call.

Yes. When you buy hearing aids at AUDIO-LOGIC, PC, batteries are included for three years, along with cleanings and refittings. The cost is built into your purchase up front, so there's no separate bill each time you need a new pack. Stop by our office in the Fox Hollow Professional Center to pick them up, or call ahead and we'll have them waiting.

If you choose rechargeable hearing aids, you won't need disposable batteries at all, and the cleanings and refittings still apply. If you wear hearing aids you bought somewhere else and need batteries, call (402) 564-9198 to ask about the sizes we have on hand.

Keep unopened packs at room temperature in a dry place, like a dresser drawer. Leave the tab on until you're ready to use a battery, because the tab keeps air out and the battery starts draining once it's removed. Stored this way, a sealed pack keeps for a long time, so just check the date on the package.

A few things to avoid: the refrigerator (moisture can build up), a hot car or a sunny windowsill, and loose pockets where batteries can touch coins or keys. Keep batteries away from children and pets, since swallowing one is a medical emergency. At night, open the battery door on your hearing aids so moisture can dry out and the battery isn't drained while you sleep.
