Hearing Aid Fitting in Columbus, NE

What Happens at Your Hearing Aid Fitting

Your hearing aid fitting in Columbus, NE is a one-on-one appointment with Dr. Nora Fuchs. She loads your hearing test results into the hearing aids, places them in your ears, and adjusts the sound while you talk with her. Then she shows you how to put them in, clean them, change batteries or charge them, and pair them with your phone. Family members are welcome to sit in and learn alongside you.

Real Ear Measurement and Three Years of Refittings

Two people with the same hearing test can need different settings, because every ear canal shapes sound a little differently. That's why Dr. Fuchs verifies each fitting with Real Ear Measurement, the method the American Academy of Audiology recommends. A thin probe tube measures the sound in your ear canal so she can match it to your prescription. Follow-up adjustments and refittings are included for three years, and she has been fitting hearing aids in Columbus since 1992.

Hearing Aid Fitting FAQs

What to expect from a hearing aid fitting in Columbus: the appointment itself, how Real Ear Measurement works, the first few weeks, and the follow-up visits that come after.

Plan for a longer visit than your hearing test. When you schedule, our office will tell you how much time to set aside. The appointment covers programming, Real Ear Measurement, fine-tuning while you listen, and hands-on practice with the devices.

Nobody hurries you out the door. If you want to practice inserting a custom ITE or CIC device a few more times, or you'd like help setting up the phone app, there's time for that. Bring your phone, your reading glasses if you use them, and a family member if you'd like a second set of ears. Call (402) 564-9198 to book your fitting.

It doesn't hurt. Real Ear Measurement (REM) uses a soft, thin tube placed in your ear canal next to the hearing aid. While a recording of speech plays, the tube's microphone measures how loud the sound actually is near your eardrum. Dr. Fuchs compares that reading to the target for your hearing loss and adjusts until they match.

Without REM, a hearing aid is set using the manufacturer's estimate of an average ear. The size and shape of your ear canal change how sound arrives, so that estimate can be off, especially for soft speech. Measuring takes a few minutes and takes the guessing out of the fitting. Learn more on our Real Ear Measurement page.

Most people feel settled within a few weeks of wearing them every day, though it can take longer. Hearing loss usually comes on slowly, so your brain gets used to a quieter world. When sound comes back, the hum of the refrigerator, the click of a turn signal, and your own voice can seem loud at first.

The best thing you can do is wear them from morning to bedtime. Taking them out whenever things feel noisy slows the adjustment. Keep a short list of places where sound bothers you or speech is hard to follow, and bring it to your follow-up. Dr. Fuchs uses those notes to fine-tune the settings for the places you actually spend your time.

Yes. For three years after you buy your hearing aids at AUDIO-LOGIC, PC, cleanings, batteries, and refittings are included. Most patients come back a couple of weeks after the fitting so Dr. Fuchs can adjust the settings based on real life at home, at work, and around town.

After that, regular check-ins keep the devices clean and working. If your yearly hearing test shows a change, she reprograms the hearing aids and checks them again with Real Ear Measurement. You don't need to wait for a scheduled visit, either. If something sounds off, call (402) 564-9198 and we'll find a time to take a look.
