Hearing Loss in Columbus, NE
Types and Signs of Hearing Loss in Columbus
Hearing loss in Columbus, NE usually creeps up on people. Voices start to sound mumbled, the TV gets louder, and restaurants turn into hard work. Most adults have sensorineural hearing loss, caused by age or noise damaging the inner ear. Conductive hearing loss happens when something blocks sound in the outer or middle ear, and mixed hearing loss is a combination of both. A hearing test at AUDIO-LOGIC, PC shows which type you have and how much.

Why Untreated Hearing Loss Matters for Your Memory
Researchers have linked untreated hearing loss to a higher risk of dementia. When the brain strains to fill in missing sounds, it has less energy left for memory and thinking, and many people start skipping the conversations and gatherings that keep their minds active. Hearing aids can't undo every change, but they keep your brain hearing speech every day. Dr. Fuchs has helped Columbus families stay part of the conversation since 1992.

Common questions about hearing loss in Columbus: the early signs to watch for, what causes it, whether it can be treated, and how often adults and children should have their hearing tested.
The most common signs of hearing loss are asking people to repeat themselves, feeling like others mumble, having trouble following conversation in restaurants or at family gatherings, and turning up the TV louder than everyone else likes it. Some people notice ringing in their ears (tinnitus). Others feel worn out after a day of listening, or they start avoiding places where conversation is hard.
Because hearing loss usually happens slowly, a spouse or grown child often notices before you do. If any of this sounds familiar, a hearing test at AUDIO-LOGIC, PC will tell you what's going on. Call (402) 564-9198 to schedule.
Age is the most common cause. Age-related hearing loss develops gradually as the tiny hair cells in the inner ear wear out. Noise is the second big one. Farm equipment, power tools, hunting rifles, factory floors, and loud music all damage those same hair cells, and the damage adds up over the years. Ear infections, genetics, head injuries, some medications, and conditions like diabetes can also play a part.
You can't stop getting older, but noise-induced hearing loss is preventable. Wear hearing protection every time you mow, shoot, or run loud equipment. Dr. Fuchs makes custom hearing protection molded to your ears, which fits better than foam plugs and is more comfortable to wear for a full shift or a day in the field.
It depends on the type. Sensorineural hearing loss, the kind caused by age or noise, is permanent because the damaged hair cells in the inner ear don't grow back. It is very treatable, though. Hearing aids programmed to your hearing test make speech clearer and keep your brain used to hearing it.
Conductive hearing loss is sometimes temporary. Fluid behind the eardrum, an infection, or a problem with the small bones of the middle ear can often be treated by a physician. When Dr. Fuchs sees signs of a medical cause, she'll refer you to an ear specialist and coordinate with them on your care. Mixed hearing loss may need both kinds of treatment.
Dr. Fuchs recommends a hearing test once a year for adults. A yearly test catches changes early, while they're easier to manage, and gives you a record to compare against. If you already wear hearing aids, the yearly test shows whether they need to be reprogrammed.
Children can have their hearing tested at any age, from infants through teens. Call us or talk with your pediatrician if your child doesn't respond to sounds, has a speech delay, or often seems not to hear you. Teens who wear earbuds for hours, go to concerts, or hunt should be checked too. Call (402) 564-9198 to schedule a hearing test in Columbus.
